I just found a card in my pocket from this restaurant and realized I never wrote about it here. A couple of Fridays ago I got home, and Calvin wanted to go out despite how rainy and dreary it was outside. He said on the way home from his softball games in East Cobb he had seen what looked like a French restaurant, and he wanted to try it. So off we went. He thought it was off Highway 120 in Marietta, but we drove up and down and couldn't find it. It didn't help that he also couldn't remember the name of the place, or any other places close by. But the fact that he actually noticed a restaurant and wanted to go there is just amazing to me. So anyway, after going down the highway twice, Calvin gave up and I mentioned a little place I've been wanting to try that's on my way to work, and I told him that I though it was French as well, so let's just go there instead. So we did. Well, as we pulled in, Calvin gets all excited. See, this is the place he had seen and wanted to try. It was quite a distance from where he thought it was, which just cracks me up. He was sure it was on the route he takes home from the softball games. Either way, it was a little eery how we both wanted to try the same new place without knowing the other even knew of it.
We got to Provence late, around 9:30pm, and we were the only ones in the whole restaurant, which kinda worried me at first. But then I saw the menu. Everything sounded so good I had a really hard time deciding what to try. For appetizers, I had the soup of the day, which was cream of carrot, and Calvin had portabello mushrooms stuffed with crab meat. Both were excellent. I also had a glass of the house Shiraz, which was perfect. I really enjoyed it, but I forgot to find out what kind it was so I could get it for myself. For our entrees, I had pistachio crusted salmon with a mango watermelon salsa, asparagus, and tomato-basil mashed potatoes. Calvin had that night's special: seafood paella, which he really enjoyed. We ate so much we were afraid there wasn't going to be room for dessert, but if you think I would eat dinner at a french place and not get dessert, you really must not know me. I ordered a frozen white chocolate mousse with nougat bits. Calvin had the creme brulee. The brulee was very thin, so each bit had some of the sugar crust, and wasn't accented with the unnecessary mint sprig that is so common. The mousse had bits of nougat mixed through, and it was perfectly drizzled with dark chocolate sauce and garnished with fresh strawberries. Both were top notch, and we ended up sharing.
Overall, the meal was great. Service was excellent. We were the only ones in the whole place for the entire dinner, and it felt like the restaurant existed only to serve us. The music set a nice atmosphere, and our server disappeared after each delivery of each awesome course, yet he reappeared just when we needed him too. It was elegant without being fancy. Calvin was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, but it didn't seem out of place for him to be dresses so casually. It was priced right for the quality, and I know that we'll be back.
